The Green Canopy

An expansion into ideas of Abstraction, Creative Writing, and Art-viewing using new processes and materials.

The Green Canopy builds on ‘Threads of Memory, The Spaces Between Us,' a 6-week pilot that explored online delivery and staff training in digital and craft activities on a clinical dementia ward, commissioned by the Arts Charity within Cardiff and Vale University Health Board (CAVUHB).

The Green Canopy explored how viewing art, combined with creative writing, inspired making abstract art. Due to circumstances outside my control (support staff shortages and Covid), the project was postponed. Despite the challenges, I tested the processes with a socially prescribed Women’s Support Group based at the Neighbourhood Learning Centre, Trevethin, (led by Alice Smith, an artist working with Inside Out Cymru).

This experience has strengthened my art practice and has informed me how I will deliver the project with CAVUHB and Mental Health Matters in 2022. The process is new for CAVUHB - involving an artist to co-create with patients and staff. I have visualised what our paintings might look like when they are installed within the hospitals.
